Both the local comic book shops here are completely sold out of copies of Watchmen. And these aren't little hole-in-the-wall shops, either. Just the damn trailer was enough to get everyone crawling out of the woodwork to buy the damned thing.
To be fair, I definitely am one of those crawling out to get it. I got tired of reading it in Barnes and Noble or borrowing it from friends. Guess what I'm buying for my birthday, haha!

Doctor Who: Midnight

I managed to catch up with the one episode of this season I haven't seen. So, after practically a whole season of episodes that were either 1) mind-bogglingly dumb or 2) incredibly dull (yes, I'm even looking at you, Moffat!) finally there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Was this really a RT Davies penned script? Why couldn't he turn out stuff like this more often?
I guess the other thing is that I'm a sucker for enclosed-spaces dramas and this episdoe did it good form.

Well, I'm trying to figure out a way to get to the city this weekend. Anyone know of any good bus lines? The cheapest Amtrak I could find would be out of Baltimore, a good hour away from Frederick, MD.
I want to see you guys!!!!!!!!
NYC meet-up?

I'm planning on making a trek up to New York City July 3 or 4th, before I head back to Texas and am far, far away from all of you.
Anyone want to try and meet up? I'd love to see you peeps!

Current Music: Like a Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan
When it comes to songs or albums, especially by legendary artists, I'm always wary of those that are constantly put forth as the definitive or the apex of the singers' careers, and often I actually like those that aren't always put up on the pedestal, or played to death on the radio. The Beatles' Rubber Soul will always trump Sgt. Pepper's, Hunky Dory more than Ziggy Stardust, and ZZ Topp's "Blue Jean Blues" is the best of their catalogue even if it was never one of their signature songs.
However, every once and a while those "signature" (or "overrated") songs really does earn its reputation. One of those is Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone".
Say what you will, this is one of my favorite Dylan songs, and definitely in my top ten or so of songs ever. With the exception of the Blood on the Tracks album, this was Dylan at his best. Just in terms of lyrics, this song is many heads and shoulders over the rest of the pack. Overplayed, maybe, but in my book never overrated.
When you ain't got nothin' you got nothin' to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
How does it feel, oh how does it feel
To be on your own;
With no direction home;
Like a complete unknown;
Like a rolling stone?
Stan Winston: A True Wizard

Man, oh man, oh man. Reading the news of Stan Winston's passing this morning saddened me like nothing else. I'd be lying if I said I didn't actually get a little teary-eyed.
RIP, Stan Winston. You're work has brought me, and millions of other movie-goers, so much joy through the decades. Whether it was
The Terminator,
Predator,
Aliens,
Edward Scissorhands,
Batman Returns,
Iron Man, or
Jurassic Park, you're work both inspired and wowed us all. You're right up there with Jim Henson and ILM as the people who made movies truly magical all over again.
The first time I ever heard of Stan Winston was watching the "Making of Jurassic Park" as a child. Seeing how those full-size dinosaur animatronics were brought to life changed the way I looked at movies forever. He will be missed.

When a show dies for you

So, SciFi had a new episode of Doctor Who on tonight. I got about ten minutes in, then found out that Hot Fuzz was HBO. Basically, I can't be bothered about Doctor Who now*.
It's a pity, since I adored the third series and actually kinda like Donna as a companion. But it's hard to like a show when it's become boring as hell and the presence of the main character (Doctor #10 in this case) grates you like nails on a chalkboard. Ah, well, there's still Battlestar.

*this doesn't include the old episodes. "Ghostlight" still never ceases to amaze me.

Things to know about Laredo, TX
Posted on 2008.05.13 at 10:00
1) Texas is big. Really big! You just won't believe how vastly hugely mindboggingly big it is. I mean you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to Texas. (Let's just say this: it was a 20 hr drive from KY to TX, and ten hours of that was just Texas)
2)People here drive crazy, but not as crazy as Puerto Rico.
3) Most people are Hispanic, and most people speak Spanish, but it's been surprisingly easy to get around on just English.
4) Mother's Day is kinda huge here. Practically every woman on Sunday was wearing a corsage. And the cemeteries were covered with flowers.
5) Practically everyone I've met here has been exceedingly nice.
6) Laredo seems to have the same zoning laws as Florida: gorgeous old homes on one block, dumpy trailers on the next.
7) Como se dice "flat broke" en espanol? 'Cause with these property prices, that's what I'm gonna be!
8) We've already had 100 degree days here.
9)Don't believe all the horrible things you read about Laredo. That stuff is pretty well confined to Zapata Highway area and Nuevo Laredo in Mexico. I haven't had my car stolen yet!

FRAK, FRAK, FRAK!!!
We had a massive rainstorm last night here in KY and our basement leaked massively, as in an entire wall is nearly rotted out most likely. Boxes of my books (the ones that I couldn't fit in my room) are now soaking wet. I've been spending most of this afternoon going at them with a hairdryer to salvage as many as I can. The magazines are pretty well lost, unfortunately, as are some of the paperbacks.
The worst of this is that the flooding has pretty well ruined almost all of my Star Wars books. As some of you know, I collect Star Wars figures and such, and I try my damnedest to take care of every piece the best I can, even if I know that it won't be worth much anyway. Why? B/c I'm OCD about my Star Wars stuff. So all these books and magazines I've been holding onto since about 1997 are now completely ruined. Also ruined are the large Beatles books my sister and I collected. Frak.
The only solace I can take is that all of my art books, textbooks, and TE Lawrence books (including a few old editions and a manga I could only order from Japan) were safely stored upstairs in my room.
More than I few times I've felt like of Lord Sepulchrave from Gormenghast. I hate losing books. Their one of the few possessions I really care about.
Back to the blowdryer until Battlestar comes on at 10.
